LYNCH MOTOR POWERS DERBY’S FIRST ALL ELECTRIC PASSENGER RIVER BOAT.

Lynch Motors power the first all electric river boat in Derby.

Did you know the Lynch Motor powers Derby’s first all-electric river boat!  The zero-emission passenger boat, the Outram,  started taking passengers on the river Derwent in 2022 and still runs regular trips up and down the river, between Spring and Autumn.

Lynch Motors upgraded the original marine drive system in the narrowboat, to the Lynch Swordfish 16, which enabled the boat to cope with its move from canals to the fast flowing Derwent River.

The aim was to make the boat as environmentally friendly as possible, and with the high number of journeys the boat undertakes, the Lynch electric propulsion system is the perfect solution.  The batteries are partially charged using solar panels, delivering a great example of zero emission travel on the river.

The Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust, who pioneered the project, hope to encourage other local boat owners to follow their example and convert to zero emission propulsion too.

The Outram is the first boat in the Derby riverboat fleet, fittingly named after Benjamin Outram a Derbyshire born engineer, who built many railways and canals across the UK during the industrial revolution.

The Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust have a gallant vision to restore and improve the waterways in the Derbyshire area and to safeguard the local heritage.  You can follow their journey and cause on their informative website https://derbycanal.org.uk/derby-riverboat/
